Followers of Christ and their Jewish counterparts believe that the scriptures, as we know them today, were written by men by the inspiration of God. The human authors who wrote the Bible did not do so by an act of their own will or natural inspiration. Rather, the Holy Spirit exerted supernatural influence upon these writers as stated. One of Jesus’s disciples clarified that understanding more than 2,000 years ago. He wrote:
Holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.
2 Peter 1:21
The Bible is timeless and true. Though challenged by men for thousands of years, most Biblical scholars have agreed that with respect to history or natural science, the biblical account is accurate. Although written by 40 men over a period of 1500 years, the Bible flows harmoniously and seamlessly, void of inconsistencies or contradictions. As King David wrote more than 2800 years ago,
…the Spirit of the Lord spoke by me and His word was on
2 Samuel 23:2
my tongue.
Christians believe that the words of the Bible are “God-breathed” and present the most accurate understanding of man’s relationship with God and God’s desire to enjoy eternal fellowship with men and women.
Paul writing to Timothy explained:
All Scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness
2 Timothy 3:16
The author of Hebrews wrote:
For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
Hebrews 4:12
