What does it mean to believe in God the Father?

The first line in the Apostles Creed reads: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

It is a defining common belief held by more than two billion people who call themselves Christians. It is the affirmation that the God of the Bible, a God who exists in three persons, is the father of Jesus. More than that, he is the creator of all that exists. From the proteins that are foundational to all live forms, to a universe so vast that it is incomprehensible to the human mind.

This almighty God created the world in which we live, established a covenant with mankind, and set a plan in motion to redeem his greatest creation–men and women–who He made in his image. He gave them free choice and their choices caused them to turn their backs on their creator and opened an eternal separation between them and Him. But God never turned his back on mankind.

This God, who is described in so many ways throughout the pages of scripture, loved his creation to such a degree that he ultimately sent his son, Jesus, to pay the penalty for all the sins of every man and woman ever born and who will be born in the future. It is this God, the almighty one, the creator of heaven and earth that we Christians believe in. He is not an abstract idea, or a vengeful unapproachable being, or an image carved out of stone or wood or formed in metal or clay. This God of the universe that Christians believe in and worship and obey is an approachable God with whom we can commune. He guides our thoughts and our actions. He calls us to be his servants on earth. He is a god that defies human comprehension yet one who shows us how to live in harmony with one another and with his creation and offers a pathway to Him that ensures a fellowship with him that transcends human death.

The Apostles Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit
and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
